FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Extended digital device usage can lead to a condition known as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Symptoms can include dry eyes, redness, irritation, blurred vision, and headaches. It’s due to lack of blinking and the exposure to blue light from screens.

The warm and dry climate in parts of South Africa can lead to increased evaporation of tears, contributing to dry, red eyes. Additionally, exposure to wind and dust can irritate the eyes.

Ironically, dry eyes can cause an overproduction of tears, a condition known as reflex tearing. It’s the body’s way of trying to self-soothe the dryness. This is common with digital eye strain due to infrequent blinking when staring at screens.

Implement the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), adjust your workspace ergonomics, maintain a healthy diet, hydrate often, and consider homeopathic eye relief products to manage symptoms.

The causes of dry and irritated eyes may be:

  • The use of contact lenses
  • Long-term exposure to spaces with air conditioning (office, airplane).
  • Intensive and long-term watching (television, mobile phone or computer screen).
  • You’re over the age of 50
  • Windy, cold, dry or dusty conditions
  • Smoking or alcohol consumption
  • Use protective eyewear during activities that may be dangerous to your eyes, such as yard work, sports or home repairs.
  • Wash your hands before handling contact lenses.
  • Wear sunglasses with 99% or 100% UVA and UVB protection.
  • Consider computer glasses to safeguard their vision during long days working in front of a screen.
